It's interesting how you navigate the complexity here. I'm curious, how do med students reconcile the clear biological focus in teaching with the acute awareness of sociological underpinnings? That seems like a very difficult balance to strike in practise.

Thanks for the thoughts! Short answer: Difficultly.

I think many medical students (and practicing clinicians) feel frustrated by an incomplete understanding of these phenomena - but simultaneously, making do with what is within the realm of expertise and what is outside.

There are some lectures on history and mentions of sociological underpinnings - those that are interested, can always ask and delve deeper. But it is not a mandatory requirement, particularly as not all medical students will become psychiatrists.
